Jamaica: a long civic history
Jamaica was settled under Dutch rule in 1656. It served as the county seat of Queens County from 1683 until 1788, a period that shaped the crossroads role it would later hold as a commercial and transit hub for the borough.
The district's mix of residential blocks, retail corridors, and industrial waterfront areas means issues in District 27 routinely reach from land use and overdevelopment to transportation, housing, and small business support.
